Love was stupid. Love was a delusion of deranged people, used to excuse the most heinous behaviors.
Besides even if love did exist, Lee would never love someone as silly and plain as I was. I was a blank slate. My only flair was my hips.
"Ignore the mess, it's just where we hide the bodies." Chelle's eyes danced with wit. To her, her home wasn't a can of sewage spoiling in the sun, it was normal. She was comfortable.
Lee chuckled and Chelle emerged from her cocoon gleaming. "What do you like to do for fun?"
Lee's hand stroked the curve of my side, his fingers dipped into the waist of my pants. 'Sex,' his body stated but his lips said, "Read mostly." Lee's eyes caressed my face, neck, and traveled down to my pelvis.
What exactly did he mean by that? Was I an open book to him? We still hadn't talked about Senecca, about the rumors.
"What do you like to read?" Even as I asked, Chelle's eyes narrowed. Maybe she wanted me to stay quiet. Did she have an agenda? Was she trying to gauge if he was good enough for me or was she angry that I was the one who his arm pulled close?
"Fantasy." Lee placed a finger on my lips and slowly trailed it across, "Mostly." Our eyes met. My lips burned. My tongue darted out. The salt of his skin met my taste buds with an inferno. My body ached to be closer to his.
"What else?" I asked taking his finger into my mouth and nibbling on it.
His eyes darkened. Everything went silent except his voice in my head, 'You, your body and what it wants.' He sent images of rumpled sheets, naked skin, our bodies twining, the feel of his hot mouth on my bare torso.
A quiet moan escaped and Lee growled his pants filled with an erection.
Out loud he said, "Everything."
I wanted him to tear away my clothing. I wanted to rip off his white tank top, unbutton his pants and...
Chelle's brother Drew came in. "I'm hungry is there any..." Spotting Lee he stopped midsentence his eyes widened, star-struck almost. Drew's dark gaze went up and down Lee with an adoration that wasn't unique to the female gender. Guys wanted to be Lee and girls wanted to fuck him.
Drew was already promising to be just as striking with his tawny blonde hair and body of wiry muscles that although not yet developed were showing hints of the man he would someday become. I wanted to tell Drew to slow down take his time, but I knew it was no use. He was in a rush to grow up faster than any kid I knew.
Often Drew made me the saddest of them all. He wanted so badly just for someone to love him unconditionally, but at every turn, he faced harsh criticisms and neglect.
I withdrew from Lee. "What's the longest book you've ever read?" I needed to cool off. I needed a distraction. I needed to put on the constraints of child-friendly behavior.
Lee didn't take his eyes off me. He studied my body, my fluttering hands. "The Utah law code." His gaze measured my reaction.
Chelle scoured the yellow refrigerator for food. "There's leftover mac and cheese."
I walked outside to cool off. Lee followed. "Why did you read that?" I asked my back to him.
"I was in jail. I'm on probation."
I turned to Lee, his cheeks pinkened. "Oh, do you want to be a lawyer?"
Lee's gaze sharpened. It wasn't the response he expected. Most people hated I wasn't predictable and didn't think along the same worn out paths as everyone else.
Lee stepped closer. His hand went to my waist. He wanted to fuck me long and hard. He liked my brain.
'Zombie,' I thought. The peculiar endearment for him made me smile.
Lee pulled me close. His hot breath in my ear sent chills down my body. "I want to go into computer science."
The sky darkened and a chill wind numbed my skin. Would it be college taking him away? That wouldn't be so bad.
The wind blew harder. My bones shook with the answer. 'No.'
A vision of dark wolves tearing him apart as his screams filled my mind. Blood gushing from his neck and thigh made me weak and dizzy. Whatever was coming for Lee, I was already too late. I wrapped my arms around him and wished for the power to change what was coming.
